Pearls climb steeply in price with size, because large round pearls are rare rather than simply bigger. Most pearl jewellery uses 6 to 9mm; at 11 to 12mm a single pearl reads as a statement piece and needs nothing else on the hand.

Care — Pearls Are the Most Fragile Thing You Own

Pearl is soft, porous and dissolved slowly by acid, which includes perfume, hairspray and perspiration. A ring is the hardest place to protect one, because hands get washed. Take it off before washing up, cleaning and applying hand cream, wipe it with a soft damp cloth after wearing, and store it wrapped in fabric rather than sealed in plastic.
