What a Peace Buckle Is

The ping'an kou, or peace buckle, is one of the oldest forms in Chinese jade and stone carving: a smooth flat ring with a central hole, the outer circle representing the heavens and the inner opening the earth. It is worn as a protective piece and given at the start of something — a new job, a journey, a birth. The shape has no beginning and no end, which is rather the point of it.

Why Turquoise Varies

Turquoise forms as water moves through copper-bearing rock, and the dark veining running through a stone is the host rock it grew in. That matrix is not a flaw — it is the record of where the stone came from, and it is why no two peace buckles look alike.
