Why Rainbow Obsidian Has Bands
Obsidian is volcanic glass — lava cooled too fast to form crystals. In rainbow obsidian, microscopic layers of mineral inclusions sit inside that glass, and light bouncing off them produces bands of green, purple and gold that appear and vanish as the stone turns. Under a dull sky it looks plain black. Hold it to a lamp and the eye appears.

Care
Obsidian is glass, which makes it hard but brittle — it chips rather than scratches if dropped on a hard floor. The rope chain absorbs water, so take the necklace off before showering and let it dry fully if it does get wet. Wipe the stone with a soft dry cloth.
FAQ
Why can't I see the rainbow in the photograph? The sheen only appears when light strikes the internal layers at the right angle. It is a directional effect, which is why obsidian photographs as plain black more often than not.
